Minimum tillage unpuddled transplanting: An alternative crop establishment strategy for rice in conservation agriculture cropping systems

Abstract: 11Adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) has been hampered in puddled rice-based 12 cropping systems. In this study, we developed a method for transplanting rice (Oryza 13 sativa L.) with minimal soil disturbance (referred to as minimum tillage unpuddled 14 transplanting) that can expand the range of situations where CA could be practiced 15 in rice-based cropping systems. A field experiment was conducted over three years 16 at two sites with unpuddled and puddled rice comparisons in each monsoon season.

“…One week before of striptill the soil, pre-planting non-selective herbicide, Roundup® (glyphosate 41 % SL-IPA salt), was applied @ 75 mL/ 10 L water (2.25 L ha -1 ). Then the land was strip-tilled at 20 cm apart by a locally made 2WT-driven power tiller named Versatile Multi-Crop Planter (VMP) [4]. The land was fertilized with phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc @ 20, 35, 10 and 1.5 kg ha -1 as triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and ZnSO4, respectively just before strip tillage.…”

“…By contrast, non-puddled transplanting is an emerging option to overcome these problems and also reduce cost of rice cultivation [4][5][6]. Additionally, rice established by non-puddled transplanting gives similar or higher yield than that of puddled transplanted rice, but grain yield may sharply decline if weed management is not done properly [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Just before strip tillage, the land was fertilized as per recommended practice and then the land was inundated to 3-5 cm depth of standing water for 48 hours (Haque et al 2016). Twenty fiveday-old rice seedlings of all the rice varieties were transplanted on 03 August 2013 at 15 cm spacing between hills allocating three seedlings per hill.…”

“…A local service provider (LSP) offered contract planting using VSSD to establish wheat, lentil, jute, mustard crops on more than 70 farmers' fields including several farmers who used the VSSD to make strips in untilled fields before establishing unpuddled transplanted rice [18] during 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The contracted land sizes were 850 to 4500 m 2 .…”

“…The VSSD was used to make 20-40 mm wide and 40-50 mm deep tilled strips (that preserved about 80% undisturbed soil) in undisturbed flat land: Following this, strip making ponded irrigation water to soak the soil for 24 h. Rice seedlings were transplanted manually in strips [18] at 250 mm between rows and 200 mm between hills.…”
