Minor Salivary Gland Basal Cell Adenocarcinoma

Abstract: We present a comprehensive review of minor salivary gland BCAC, describing nearly 3 times as many cases as has been previously reported. This review characterizes a rare disease and increases awareness of the disease among otolaryngologists. Minor salivary gland BCAC is similar to major salivary gland BCAC and minor salivary gland tumors in general with regard to patient age, sex, tumor site, treatment modality, recurrence, metastasis, and mortality.

“…Based on careful revision of serial pre-operative MRI, transient evidence of an intrasphenoidal cyst was noticed, placed on the TS route to the prolactinoma. As only pathological minor salivary glands are seen by radiological imaging [ 58 , 59 ], we finally concluded for residual inflammation in a submucosal SG following spontaneous reabsorption of the cyst. This pitfall should therefore be considered in the presence of SG acini contaminating surgical fragments obtained by TS, as it may open the possibility of a second TS approach.…”

“…Since these cancers seldom metastasize to lymph nodes, neck dissection is not routinely recommended. However, reported local recurrence rates of basal cell carcinoma are high, and the mortality rate is low [8,9]. Here we report a rare and challenging case of carcinoma ex BCA with local recurrence within two years to raise the awareness of both surgeons and pathologists of such an unusual tumor disorder.…”

“…Regional lymph node dissection is indicated only in cases involving cervical lymph nodes [ 3 , 4 , 15 17 ]. BCAC affecting the minor salivary glands are more infiltrative than lesions affecting the major salivary glands [ 18 ]. Several surgical approaches have been described, such as an infratemporal approach from the lateral aspect, an antereolateral approach and transpalatal, transmaxillary, and transcervical approaches from the inferior aspect [ 19 ].…”
