There is co-morbid occurrence of adolescent problem behaviors, and these behaviors manifest differently and vary in severity (1) . For instance, some adolescents who withdraw from stress and distress addict to substance and internet use (2, 3) , whereas some act out in the form of misbehavior and delinquency (4) . In particular, research fi ndings have shown that there are gender differences: boys tend to employ externalizing and risk-taking behavior as ventilation, while girls tend to internalize stress and become depressed (5, 6) . Nevertheless, different problem behaviors may share similar etiologies (7) . Adopting the ecological approach, adolescents ' behaviors result from the complex interplay between themselves and the surrounding environment. Their engagement in problem behaviors, such as substance abuse (8) , internet addition (9) , and depression and suicidal ideation (10) , are fueled by various risk factors, together with inadequate protective factors, at the personal level and in their family, school, peers and community. Therefore, it is pertinent to depict the profi les, correlates and causes of different problem behaviors, for such a holistic understanding help developing corresponding remedies. In preventive science, preventive and interventional remedies are the common means to tackle adolescent problem behaviors. However, it is argued that such prevention and intervention are dealing with manifest problems and thus not suffi cient enough, unless there are simultaneous developmental and educational programs addressing the underlying needs of adolescents and strengthening their potentials to deal with their own issues and problems. In fact, there is a growing consensus that adolescents ' problem behaviors could be reduced by promoting their thriving strengths (11) and psychosocial competencies (12, 13) . There are also research fi ndings showing that positive youth development programs were related to a reduction of problem behavior as well as healthy changes among adolescents in both Western contexts (14, 15) and Chinese cultural contexts (16,17) . Yet, programs aiming at promoting positive youth development and well-being, with demonstrated program effectiveness, are still sparse in various communities (18,19) .To further the inquiries of " what are the phenomena underlying adolescent problem behaviors ? " and " what can be done to tackle the issue effectively ? " , more research studies are necessary to examine the socio-demographic and biopsycho-social profi les related to problem behaviors. These studies can include samples at different developmental stages (i.e., not only adolescents, but also children and early adults), in various cultural contexts and communities, in order to generate a more comprehensive profi le. Moreover, it is pertinent to understand the causes of problem behaviors holistically from multi-disciplinary perspectives. In addition to research studies investigating the concurrent relationships among the variables, longitudinal research is needed to trace the developmental d...
