Miscanthus

Abstract: Miscanthus is a perennial rhizomatous warm-season C 4 grass species and is native throughout Eastern Asia and Pacific islands, ranging from tropical Polynesia to southern Siberia. Conventionally, the genus showed some attractive features for domestic uses such as livestock feed, as green manure, as well as roof materials for traditional Asian houses. In recent years, the genus has received considerable attention as a feedstock source of biorefineries such as biofuel production for sustainable renewable energy … Show more

“…Asclepias syriaca and Miscanthus sinensis , respectively, are competitive species with S. altissima in the native range of the USA and in the invasive range of Japan. Ambrosia artemisiifoli and Poa pratensis are the invasive plant species from North America, Europa and North Asia [ 45 , 98 , 114 , 115 ]. However, the effectiveness of cis -DME on those plant species was not evidently different.…”

“…Over 150 cultivars of M. sinensis have been introduced [125], of which 40 are generally available to horticulture, and 10 occur on our campus. Traditional uses for Miscanthus include roof thatching material and fodder in Japan, where it is known as 'susuki' [148,149,150]. It is known as a wild food plant in Korea, where lowers and spikelets are consumed raw [151].…”

“…One of the most productive forms of miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) is a sterile hybrid between Miscanthus sacchriflorus and Miscanthus sinensis that is clonally propagated by rhizomes [1,[16][17][18][19]. Some hybrids of M. sacchriflorus and M. sinensis display up to 30%-35% F 1 high-parent heterosis without selection for specific combining ability [20], and there has been considerable effort to identify, develop, and test new miscanthus hybrids [19,[21][22][23][24]. Switchgrass hybrids also show evidence of heterosis.…”
