Miscibility of Adsorbed 1-Undecanethiol and 11-Mercaptoundecanoic Acid Species in Binary Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au(111)

Abstract: The miscibility of a binary self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 1-undecanethiol (UDT) and 11mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) on Au(111) has been studied using voltammetry of the reductive desorption of thiol, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The binary SAMs show only a single peak on a voltammogram for the reductive desorption over the entire range of the mixing ratio of the two thiols, suggesting that these two thiols having the same number of methylene units are well-mixe… Show more

“…Secondly, the homogeneous mixing takes place when there is no significant difference of the interaction energies between A-A and B-B pairs and the A-B pair [48]. Finally, when the interaction between A and B is much stronger than those of the similar molecules, a homogeneously mixed SAMs, whose surface mixing ratio is constant without depending on the mixing ratio of thiols in the adsorption solution were obtained, as has been found in the binary SAMs of AET and MES [47].…”

“…Binary mixed SAMs of various alkanethiols have already been investigated to a great extent by contact-angle measurements, 6 ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 67 voltammetry of their reductive desorption, [64][65][66] and scanning tunneling microscopy. 65,66 Other previous work dealt with their surface property and the miscibility of two components.…”

“…65,66 Other previous work dealt with their surface property and the miscibility of two components. 66 MHA/HT mixed SAMs were prepared by a standard procedure using ethanol solutions containing MHA and HT with different mole fractions of them and a constant total concentration of 1 mM.…”
