“…The new features observed due to liposome interaction/incorporation into the octadecanol layer are not the partial incorporation of liposomes anticipated but are more like the existence of a new phase of lipid and octadecanol which is thicker than the original adsorbed octadecanol layer. The solubility and phase behavior of 1-alkanols in lipid monolayers or bilayers have been studied. For a DMPC lipid monolayer with added 1-dodecanol, a decrease in the molar volume of the alcohol was observed when comparing the pure state of the alkanols to the state when in the membrane. The 1-alkanol resides in the tail region of the membrane, with the alcohol group interacting with the PC headgroup.…”

“…Even though these are shorter chains than the DOPC studied here, the fluidity is similar. The interaction of hexadecanol with eggPC (a mixture of lipids with either one or two unsaturated alkyl tails; in DOPC, both tails have one double bond) 52 showed that the compounds were partially miscible and can induce a phase change in eggPC from an expanded (LE) to a condensed (LC) phase. The creation of these higher (thicker) regions after the incorporation of DOPC into the octadecanol adsorbed layer may be explained by the formation of a mixed layer in these regions in which the DOPC is partially miscible.…”

“…Recently, it was reported that a hydrogenated soy lecithin/soy lecithin/PA/Hel 13-5 mixture exhibited surfactant activity comparable to that of Surfacten ® 27, 28 ; this suggests that artificial surfactants that do not contain synthetic DPPC and PG are possible. In a previous study 19 , we considered egg yolk phosphatidylcholine eggPC extracted and purified from relatively inexpensive egg yolk as an alternative to DPPC. The fatty-acid moieties in eggPC comprised double hydrocarbon chains composed of both saturated and unsaturated acyl chains: DPPC 2C16:0 was a large component.…”
