PurposeThe activities carried out in ports are disruptive to the environment where they are located. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the presence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the missions and visions of the main ports of Latin America.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative technique of content analysis was applied to the missions and visions of 72 ports in Latin America. First, the missions and visions of the ports were collected (72). Second, it was assigned a value 1 if the mission had any evidence of CSR, 0 if it had no evidence and “-” if the mission was not found. The same procedure was performed with the visions.FindingsResults indicate that 20.83% of the ports allude to CSR in their missions, 34.72% of the ports allude to it in their missions and visions and 13.88% only allude to it in their visions (22 ports did not mention it in their missions or their visions). So, the main findings indicate that in Latin America the majority of ports do not consider elements of CSR in their missions and visions.Originality/valueThis paper is mainly focused on covering two gaps in the literature: first, to increase knowledge about the strategic bases of ports in Latin America through their missions and visions; and second, to visualize the coherence of the missions and visions with the activities of CSR.

Knowledge management and innovation: Two explicit intentions pursued by Spanish university libraries

This article analyses the content of three types of institutional statements (mission, vision and values) published on Spanish university libraries’ websites. The aim is to determine whether they express explicit support for knowledge management and innovation in the university. The analysis revealed that 75% of the population (n = 76) published at least one such statement. The most widely published of the three types was the mission statement, 37 of which contained the terms ‘knowledge’ or ‘innovation’, particularly the former, present in 33. The vision statements of 17 libraries alluded to both, in practically the same proportion. ‘Innovation’ appeared in 20 of 28 libraries with statements of values, denoting the high esteem in which that conceit is held by university librarians. These statements stand as proof that libraries regard innovation and some stage of knowledge management as primary aims, with the furtherance of knowledge creation/generation the one most frequently cited.

There is an established research agenda on dissecting an article’s components and their association with a journal’s prestige. However, journals’ titles and their overview, aim and scope (i.e. journal’s mission statement – JMS(s)) have not been investigated with the same diligence. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive outlook of titles and JMSs’ lexical structure and identify significant differences between journals prestige and type of access and their JMS content in the field of business, management and accounting (BMA), considering the field’s experience in developing and applying mission statements. Titles and JMSs’ structural analysis reflected current and critical discussion in BMA: a predilection for counterintuitive findings and information and communication technology (ICT) tools. JMSs expressed primarily target customers and markets. JMSs from reputable journals showed a higher betweenness for key-terms related to rigorous features. In contrast, JMSs of lower reputable journals highlighted indexing attributes. The Wilcoxon rank-sum and the Kruskal–Wallis tests showed significant differences in the JMSs’ median diversity regarding the journal’s type of access and best quartiles.
