Mississippian (Early Carboniferous) sequence stratigraphy of the Rhenish Kulm Basin, Germany

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The Rhenish Kulm Basin is a deeper-water foreland basin developing in front of the Variscan Orogen in Germany. Three major facies interfinger and might overwhelm the adjacent one in time. These are (1) internal siliciclastic flysch facies, (2) central starved basin facies, and (3) calciturbidite facies. Calciturbidites are derived from the Northwest European shallow-water carbonate platform or not preserved intrabasinal sources. Besides, a deep intrabasinal swell facies is characterized by condensed … Show more

“…8). In these units the Asbian-Brigantian boundary is usually placed at the disconformity between the Bee Low and Monsal Dale limestones (Butcher & Ford 1973;Walkden 1977;Gutteridge 1989), conforming to the Mississippian sequence 9 -10 boundary (Herbig et al 2016).…”

“…Facies and differentiation in basins and ranges suggest a starved basin adjacent to the Variscan hinterland (Wendt & Aigner, ) and situated in a low to middle latitude in the westernmost part of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean. The area occupied by this facies is large, in comparison with small swells capped by cephalopod limestone and associated to drowned reefs and embryonic tectonic structures of the Variscan deformation in the Rhenish Kulm Basin (“Erdbach‐type” limestone after Herbig, ).…”

“…Global stages, regional substages and foraminifer zones were compiled from Poty et al (2006), Poty et al (2014), Vachard et al (2018a) and Müller & Hahn (2018). Conodont zones were compiled from Herbig (2016). Abbreviated ammonoid zones were compiled from Korn & Gereke (in Amler & Gereke 2002).…”
