Mites (Mesostigmata: Spinturnicidae and Spelaeorhynchidae) Associated With Bats in Northeast Brazil

Abstract: In this article, we present the results of a study about mites associated with bats collected in the State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil. Of the 331 bats collected, 23 were found naturally infested by mites, corresponding to an overall prevalence of 6.9% (95% confidence interval: 4.5-10.2). Four mite species were collected from seven bat species. The following mite-bat associations were recorded: Periglischrus acutisternus Machado-Allison on Phyllostomus discolor Wagner; Periglischrus ojastii Oudemans on Car… Show more

“…Perhaps the presence of these mites on A. planirostris may be resulted of the parasite transitions to meet the preferred host, or even contamination (Table II). The prevalence of P. iheringi on Platyrrhinus lineatus is similar to the value found by Dantas-Torres et al (2009).…”

“…The most information about 10 species of Periglischrus and one of Spinturnix recorded in Brazil comprises geographic and host occurrences (Confalonieri 1976, Azevedo et al 2002, Graciolli et al 2008, Silva et al 2009). Only Gettinger and Gribel (1989), Dantas-Torres et al (2009) and Almeida et al (2011) showed at least one parasitological index (prevalence and/or intensity/abundance sensu Bush et al (1997)) for spinturnicid mites on their hosts.…”

“…Given this wide range of hosts, it is possible that P. iheringi in fact comprises a number of species (HERRIN & TIPTON, 1975). In Brazil, this mite has been reported in Artibeus lituratus (GETTINGER & GRIBEL, 1989;DANTAS-TORRES et al, 2009;SILVA et al, 2009;ALMEIDA et al, 2011;CONFALONIERI, 1976) (AZEVEDO et al, 2002;ALMEIDA et al, 2011;DANTAS-TORRES et al, 2009;CONFALONIERI, 1976).…”

“…The specimens obtained from T. bidens in the RPPN Serra das Almas are phenetically close to P. torrealbai, but they belong to a new species in description process. Comments: Considered a primary parasite of the genus Glossophaga this species had been reported in Brazil in association with G. soricina in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília and Pernambuco (CONFALONIERI, 1976;GETTINGER & GRIBEL, 1989;DANTAS-TORRES et al, 2009). Comments: This species is the most often cited in studies of bat parasites, and it is found in association with emballonuridae, noctilionidae, mormoopidae and with a majority of Phyllostomidae subfamilies (HERRIN & TIPTON, 1975).…”
