Mitigation of and Adaptation to UHI Phenomena: The Padua Case Study

Abstract: Elaborating solutions to counteract UHI effects can represents a relevant challenge for spatial planning and urban design. A specific experimentation has been developed on the city of Padua, analysing different scenarios of urban warming and using specific monitoring tools (Lidar/aerial survey) to define a DIM (Digital Surface Models) providing local situation in terms of green quality and extension, solar incidence/radiation, sky view factors, building materials. This chapter reconstruct the methodology follo… Show more

“…The approach to sustainable urbanism introduced by LEED Neighbourhood Development primarily aims to save our planet and encourage a healthier lifestyle. Sustainable urbanism is a process that integrates high-performance buildings and infrastructure to create a walkable and transit-served form of urbanism (Musco, 2018). It also focuses on the benefits of neighbourhood living, which are considered a basic unit of human settlements, by integrating five elements: definition, compactness, completeness, connectedness, and biophilia.…”

“…Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, is located in the center of the federal state in a valley basin mostly surrounded by hills. Due to its complex topographic conditions and the presence of industrial and commercial areas, the Stuttgart metropolitan area is one of the most polluted areas in Germany [22]. The region of the Neckar Valley is well known for relatively low wind speeds and a high frequency of calm winds [23].…”

“…Studies and research show how, by assuming vulnerability reduction as an intermediate goal to achieving spatial adaptation, it is possible to activate heterogeneous experiments useful to increase the resilience of different urban settings (Lerer et al, 2015;Morabito et al, 2015;Musco et al, 2016).…”
