Precipitation of asphaltenes in porous media undesirably influences oil recovery due to pore clogging and subsequent wettability alteration. This study reports, primarily, the potential application of two environmentally-friendly chemicals, a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) and a glycolipid biosurfactant known as rhamnolipid (RL), as asphaltene precipitation inhibitors. While DES was prepared by mixing glycerol, as its hydrogen bond donor (HBD) component, with methyltrioctylammonium chloride, as its hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) component, RL was extracted from the native strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The inhibition potential of these green chemicals was then characterized from experimental and theoretical perspectives. In the experimental part, the inhibition efficacy of both chemicals was initially confirmed based on the precipitation experiments. Next, filtration and optical microscopy provided evidence of chemical interaction between inhibitors and asphaltenes. To further illustrate the structural alteration of asphaltenes recovered from the inhibitor-included solutions, Fourier transform infrared and elemental analyses were conducted. Results revealed that the dominant inhibition mechanism of DES was the cracking/dissolution of asphaltene particles compared to peptization in the case of RL. Increased oxygen content and H/C ratio plus the decreased aromaticity index of the asphaltenes recovered from the DEScontaining solution compared with those of the raw asphaltene were indications of the dissolution mechanism. In addition, comparing the performance of synthesized chemicals with a conventional inhibitor, dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid, revealed the preferable performance of the chemicals. In the theoretical part, the propensity of asphaltene precipitation was studied using the surface energy concept based on the extended DLVO theory. The results showed that acid−base interactions among different subcomponents of the surface energy played a key role in retarding asphaltene precipitation by decreasing the attraction force between similar asphaltene particles, further supported by the concepts of work of cohesion and adhesion.

Asphaltene precipitation and subsequent deposition are challenging problems that hinder continuous crude oil production worldwide. Although this is a long-standing and complex problem and many efforts have been devoted to its mitigation, there is no commercial "one size fits all" type of product to reduce asphaltene deposition to date. In this work, a systematic investigation was conducted to assess the performance of commercial asphaltene inhibitors that are commonly used to disperse asphaltenes upon precipitation. In addition to their dispersion performance, each chemical was also tested by use of a packed bed column apparatus to evaluate its ability to reduce asphaltene deposition on carbon steel at high temperatures and under dynamic conditions. It was observed that the best dispersant performed very poorly on the deposition tests and the worst dispersant was a more effective deposition inhibitor. This observation highlights the limitation of dispersion tests for asphaltene deposition inhibitor screening. As a result, a novel nanoparticle-based formulation was proposed for the first time to reduce asphaltene deposition. The optimal formulation contains titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles and a surfactant dispersed in aromatic naphtha, used as a carrier. After dissolution of this mixture in oil, the final blend contains 2000 ppm active ingredients, which are readily available commodity products. The proposed formulation reduced asphaltene deposition on carbon steel by 90% with respect to the blank experiment with no active ingredients. With this work, we aim to provide valuable knowledge and tools to develop cost-effective strategies to mitigate the long-standing asphaltene deposition problem. It is clear that the qualification process used to screen chemicals must be changed from dispersion analysis to actual asphaltene deposition tests, such as the ones conducted as part of this study.

La investigación tuvo como objetivo comparar la eficiencia inhibidora y estabilizante de asfaltenos, en mezclas de aceite de cáscaras de Anacardium occidentale (CNSL) en diésel y productos dispersantes comerciales, para evaluar el aceite como alternativa de tratamiento químico antiasfalténico del petróleo crudo. Se determinó el umbral de floculación por precipitación con n-heptano y el punto de dispersión por adición de xileno, ambos mediante la observación directa de la formación de flóculos de asfaltenos en un microscopio óptico. El diseño experimental utilizado fue factorial, con cuatro variables respuestas (umbral de floculación, actividad inhibidora, índice de inestabilidad y eficiencia de estabilización) y dos factores experimentales (producto y dosis). Se evaluaron cinco productos con CNSL y tres productos comerciales, todos en dosis 2, 4, 6 y 8 µl en 10 ml de una muestra de petróleo crudo mediano. El análisis estadístico se basó en Anova multifactorial y test de diferencia mínima significativa de Fisher (LSD) con α = 0.05. Se obtuvo que los dos factores experimentales influyeron significativamente en las variables respuestas de forma individual y también sus interacciones. Los productos con CNSL fueron más eficientes como inhibidores y los comerciales más eficientes como estabilizadores.
