Mitigation of lightning overvoltage in gas insulated substations concerning ferromagnetic ring effect

Abstract: Summary In this paper, the impact of surge arresters and ferromagnetic ring on the magnitude as well as the steepness of lightning overvoltages in gas insulated substation (GIS) are investigated. This investigation is carried out through modeling of a typical 380‐kV GIS using ATP/EMTP for very fast transient overvoltages. Two scenarios of lightning strikes, backflashover and shielding failure are considered. Also, the impact of ferromagnetic ring on the surge arrester performance is evaluated. The evaluation i… Show more

“…The authors of [2,8,12] that explained the EGLA advantages, but these papers have not investigated which type of EGLA is more suitable for selection. Some papers such as [15] the impact of surge arresters and ferromagnetic ring on the magnitude of lightning overvoltages in GIS are represented in ATP/EMTP software [16]. However, the location of surge arrester is on the entrance and at the transformers terminal of GIS and has not considered different arrester types.…”

“…Protection of power system and its large and small devices against these events is one of the most important tasks that should be performed well to ensure the stability and the permanent activity of power system. This issue is particularly important in power transmission and distribution systems . Therefore, various solutions had been used in the electrical industry to prevent these events as shown in Figure .…”
