MITO: A new operational model for the forecasting of the Mediterranean sea circulation

Abstract: Availability of detailed short-term forecasts of the ocean main characteristics (circulation and waves) is essential for a correct management of the human activities insisting on coastal areas. These activities include the extraction of renewable energy, which has developed in recent years, and will play an important role in the context of future blue growth. The present work describes the implementation of a new ocean operational system, named MITO, that provides daily 5 days forecasts of the Mediterranean Se… Show more

“…The CYCOFOS (Cyprus Coastal Ocean Forecasting and Observing System) (Zodiatis et al, 2003), which is a subregional forecasting and observing system in the eastern G. Coppini et al: The Mediterranean Forecasting System -Part 1 Mediterranean Levantine Basin, uses the Med-MFC outputs to set its boundary conditions. The Med-MFC outputs are used as initial and lateral boundary conditions by the physical and wave ocean system MIT Operational (MITO), which provides 5 d forecasts at a resolution up to 1/48 • (Napolitano et al, 2022). The Southern Adriatic Northern Ionian coastal Forecasting System (SANIFS) is a coastal-ocean operational system providing short-term forecasts since September 2014 (Federico et al, 2017).…”
