Mitochondrial DNA diversity of the Amerindian populations living in the Andean Piedmont of Bolivia: Chimane, Moseten, Aymara and Quechua

Abstract: The genetic diversity of 401 nucleotide mtDNA sequences, in the hypervariable Control Region, from positions 16 000-16 400, was characterized in a sample of 46 Amerindians living in the Piedmont area in the Beni Department of Bolivia. The results obtained indicate that the genetic diversity in the area is higher than that observed in other American groups living in much larger areas and despite the reduced size of the studied area the human groups analysed show high levels of inter-group variability. In additi… Show more

“…Contemporary Amerindians from Atacama have shown 62.5-72.0% of haplogroup B. [35][36][37] To clarify the origin and past dissemination of this retrovirus, extensive genetic analysis of a number of HTLV-1s isolated from diverse geographic regions has been conducted. Some studies support the hypothesis that the dissemination of HTLV-1 from Africa to the New World 11,16 occurred during the slave trade time around sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.…”

“…This lineage is generally not as widespread among ancient highland groups (FehrenSchmitz et al, 2010b) and contemporary Andean populations (Fuselli et al, 2003;Lewis et al, 2005Lewis et al, , 2007AlvarezIglesias et al, 2007;Corella et al, 2007;Afonso Costa et al, 2010;Barbieri et al, 2011;Gaya-Vidal et al, 2011). The majority of the contemporary Andean populations are characterized by a high frequency of haplogroup B2 (Table S2), which is detected at a frequency of 25% in this RDP group from Humahuaca.…”

“…Population movements driven by the Incas in the region could be responsible, at least partially, for the dilution, or the loss, of some genetic lineages (Corella et al, 2007;Barbieri et al, 2011). This phenomenon was likely accentuated by the arrival of the European settlers (Hunley & Healy, 2011).…”

“…The most common haplotype (B05) had a 16188–16189-16217 motif that was shared with another haplogroup B2 haplotype (B10). This motif was found among the Aymara and Quechua in the south central Andes in intermediate to high frequencies, suggesting a south central Andean origin for this haplotype (Álvarez-Iglesias et al, 2007; Barbieri et al, 2011; Corella et al, 2007; de Saint Pierre et al, 2012; Fuselli et al, 2003; Gayá-Vidal et al, 2011). This motif is also found in two of the Gran Chaco populations (the Pilaga, and Wichi) (Cabana et al, 2006).…”

“…Initial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) studies (Bert et al, 2001, 2004; Corella et al, 2007; Fuselli et al, 2003; Lewis et al, 2005, 2007b) included many Quechua speakers, but few Aymara speakers. Research focused mainly on the differences between Andean and Amazonian populations to contrast the micro-evolutionary processes that each region experienced and to test whether multiple migrations into South America could account for the differences.…”
