Mixed-Integer Programming Model for Transmission Network Expansion Planning with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Abstract: This article assesses the costs and benefits of incorporating battery energy storage systems (BESS) in transmission network expansion planning (TEP) over multiple time periods. We propose a mixed-integer programming model (MIP) for joint planning of the installation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and construction of new transmission lines in multiple periods of time. The mathematical formulation of the presented model is based on the strategies of the agents of a transmission network to maximize thei… Show more

“…However, in practice, the discharging and charging states cannot be simultaneously activated for energy storage systems, that is, for any time k, either D k = 0 or C k = 0. Generally, binary variables depicting either-or situations will be used to yield a mixed integer programming problem [28,29]. This unfortunately is not compatible with the DRO framework developed above and will be left for future research.…”

“…where r 1 determines the dimension of the lookup space (range of solutions); r 2 determines the range of movements towards the optimal solution; r 3 presents the weight factors of particles in moving towards the optimal point; and r 4 describes the amount of displacement between sin and cos in Equation (20). Since each algorithm should establish a balance between the obtained solutions for finding the optimal point, in this algorithm, Equation ( 21) was used to establish the balance between Equations ( 18) and (19).…”

“…In the suggested method, the flexibility, reliability, and economy of the expansion plans are mentioned, and the fault severity of the equipment is molded by applying the Monte Carlo method on the IEEE 24-bus reliability test system. The economic impacts of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in TEP are modeled in [20], based on using a MIP to maximize the benefits and minimize the operational restrictions of the power flow in a transmission system. The simulation case study on the Garver 6-node test system is addressed through the suggested model advantages.…”

“…Renewable energy, however, is strongly reliant on the grid operator's ability to store electricity generated from (primarily) solar and wind energy (Keck et al, 2019;Loukatou et al, 2020;Laribi and Rudion, 2021;Mikulski and Tomczewski, 2021;Šimić et al, 2021;Olabi et al, 2022a). Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) have emerged as a critical technology in advancing the spread and development of renewable energy (Olabi et al, 2022b) and are being used to stabilize electrical grids (Mora et al, 2020;Laribi and Rudion, 2021;Moy et al, 2021), and in a new generation of electric vehicles (Rodríguez-Fernández et al, 2020;Scott and Ireland 2020;Cui et al, 2022). However, in volatile energy markets, how can enterprises be incentivized to engage in research and development (R&D) activities to make such technologies possible?…”
