Mixed methods research: what it is and what it could be

Abstract: Combining methods in social scientific research has recently gained momentum through a research strand called Mixed Methods Research (MMR). This approach, which explicitly aims to offer a framework for combining methods, has rapidly spread through the social and behavioural sciences, and this article offers an analysis of the approach from a field theoretical perspective. After a brief outline of the MMR program, we ask how its recent rise can be understood. We then delve deeper into some of the specific eleme… Show more

“…The method followed for the development of this case study is a mixed one. This type of methodology, which is booming within the field of social sciences [55], allows a joint use of qualitative and quantitative methods with the aim of creating an in-depth image about the reality studied [56]. For the quantitative part, the GAMEX (Gameful Experience Scale) scale is used, with the objective of assessing students' perceptions from different dimensions [49,57].…”

“…These dimensions were also identified using the Grounded Theory research method in a psychiatric health care context in which patients had limited freedom in their own care (Lützén, Nordin & Brolin, 1994). Timans, Wouters and Heilbron (2019) recommend the use of a mixed-method research approach in social science. In agreement with these authors, the intention of this study design was to contribute to an understanding of the moral dimension of how a selected group of participants think and act when they suspected child abuse and neglect.…”

“…In agreement with these authors, the intention of this study design was to contribute to an understanding of the moral dimension of how a selected group of participants think and act when they suspected child abuse and neglect. The mixed method design also gave a dynamic option to expand the scope and thereby improved the analytic power of the study (Levitt et al, 2018;Timans et al, 2019). The design consisted of three components: (1) Purposeful selections of participants.…”

“…We use a mixed-methods research design, which is an emerging field (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2011;Timans, Wouters, & Heilbron, 2019). Combining qualitative and quantitative research provides a better understanding of the research problem (Johnson, Onwuegbuzie, & Turner, 2007).…”
