Mixed ovarian tumor composed of brenner and thyroid elements

Abstract: An exceedingly rare ovarian neoplasm composed of mixed thyroid and Brenner tumor is reported. Review of the literature yielded only one well-documented case previously described. Although the possibility of a "collision" of two different tumors cannot be completely discarded, a possibility of an endodermal teratoma (thyroid-urothelium) is also proposed.

“…Of mature cystic teratomas, 5–20% show thyroid tissue and struma ovarii, monodermal teratoma composed mostly or predominantly of thyroid tissue occurs in 2.7% of all ovarian teratomas 2 . Co‐existing Brenner tumor and struma ovarii is very rare, and to our knowledge only seven cases have been reported in the English literature 3–10 . The present case, which is the first case in Japan, was additionally complicated with mature cystic teratoma of the opposite ovary; it is only the second case in the literature 5,6 to have the occasional association of the mixed tumor with the dermoid, although the occasional association of a Brenner tumor with the dermoid has sometimes been reported 1 .…”

“…Bilateral mature cystic teratoma occurs in about 15% of ovarian tumors 1 . The histogenesis of this mixed tumor, described in three cases in the literature, is hypothesized to be of teratoma origin 8–10 . Elemenoglou et al stained mixed ovarian tumor immunohistochemically for keratin and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) but not for thyroglobulin 10 .…”

“…Sometimes they may present as a mural nodule in a mucinous cystadenoma, mature cystic teratoma or rarely struma ovarii. 2 They may also be seen in association with transitional cell tumors of urinary bladder. 3 Borderline and malignant Brenner tumors are usually larger than benign Brenner tumors.…”
