MIXED PLANTING WITH RHIZOMATOUS PLANTS INTERFERES WITH Ganoderma DISEASE IN OIL PALM

Abstract: Basal stem rot (BSR) caused by Ganoderma boninense remains the most destructive disease in oil palm monoculture plantations. This study investigates the nature of Ganoderma infection and survival under mixed planting with rhizomatous plants and its impact on the growth of oil palm. Two mixed plants (oil palm seedling and Java turmeric, galangal, or ginger) and single planting of those plants were inoculated with Ganoderma boninense-colonised rubber wood block (RWB). The results showed that Ganoderma inoculatio… Show more

“…has a wide range of woody plants in the field (Loyd et al, 2018), but under artificial inoculation, the fungus could also infect herbaceous plants such as rhizomatous plants. The severe disease also has been recorded on inoculated galangal (Suwandi et al, 2022). Under mixed cropping, a single mycelium network of Ganoderma caused simultaneous infection (multiple hostspecies infections) on both oil palm and water yam.…”

“…Ganoderma boninense strains used in this study were obtained from oil palm Ganoderma infected diseased in West Sumatra (Gb-A) and South Sumatra (Gb-B). Both strains had been identified based on morphology and the ITS sequences (Ayundra, 2022;Suwandi et al, 2022). The two strains were somatically incompatible, indicated by a demarcation line between paired colonies in a Petri plate (Figure 1) as tested following Castillo et al (2022).…”
