Mixed solutions of silver cation and chloride anion in acetonitrile: Voltammetric and EQCM study

Abstract: Electrochemical behavior of Pt and Au electrodes in acetonitrile solutions at different concentration ratios of Cl(-) and Ag(+) ions was studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The composition of the mixed silver chloride solutions, i.e. the amount of each component of the system (solid AgCl and solute species: Ag(+), Cl(-), AgCl(2)(-)), is governed by the solubility product of AgCl and the stability constant of AgCl(2)(-)complex and depends strongly on the ratio o… Show more

“…High concentration of chloride ions in solution promotes enhanced solubility of the AgCl ( K sp AgCl=1.8×10 −10 , at 25 °C) surface layer of the Ag, AgCl electrode, through the formation of chloro‐complex ions, AgCl 2 − , AgCl 3 2− and AgCl 4 3− 7, 8, 9 , , , …”

“…Our previous publication [59] demonstrated a candidate for such a precursor: complex anion of silver and chloride, AgCl À 2 , which is nicely soluble in AN. It is formed if the overall amount of chloride in the system exceeds that of silver cation, practically all silver in the solution being transformed into this anionic form if the ratio of chloride-to-silver exceeds 2.12 [59]:…”
