“…Among the noted fish species, Oncorhynchus mykiss , Carassius spp., Liza saliens , Gasterosteus aculeatus , and Gambusia holbrooki , are nonnative. Since the construction of the Lar Dam, Caspian Sea trout populations in Lar National Park have been limited to the national park (Tabatabaei, Abdoli, Ahmadzadeh, et al., 2020; Tabatabaei, Abdoli, Hashemzadeh Segherloo, et al., 2020). As water impounded in Lar Reservoir is used to supply drinking water, no aquaculture, industrial activity, or permanent settlements are permitted.…”

“…These threats are especially harsh for fish species that perform bidirectional migrations between marine and freshwater habitats. In Iran native Caspian Sea trout ( Salmo caspius ) populations found in the southern Caspian Sea and inland lake basins (Hashemzadeh Segherloo, Tabatabaei, Abdoli, et al., 2022) are put at risk by all of the above‐listed threats and many have already declined (Abdoli, 2000; Kiabi et al., 1999; Tabatabaei, Abdoli, Ahmadzadeh, et al., 2020; Tabatabaei, Abdoli, Hashemzadeh Segherloo, et al., 2020). This situation has led to the development and implementation of national management and conservation programs by Iranian fisheries and environmental organizations to protect the populations of the species that inhabit the south Caspian Sea basin.…”

“…During the last decades, the capture rate of S. caspius throughout the southern basin of the Caspian Sea have had a considerable reduction. There are several factors for this observation among which the overfishing, poaching, drought, rivers' system manipulation, water pollution and dam constructions draw more attention [8,9]. It is presumed that the populations of S. caspius, the lake-run form of Salmo in the southern Caspian basin, have been more affected by the dam constructions and consequent losing nursery grounds, making it too difficult for natural breeding and recovery of the wild stocks [10].…”
