Mixed Transition‐Metal Oxides: Design, Synthesis, and Energy‐Related Applications

Abstract: A promising family of mixed transition-metal oxides (MTMOs) (designated as Ax B3-x O4 ; A, B=Co, Ni, Zn, Mn, Fe, etc.) with stoichiometric or even non-stoichiometric compositions, typically in a spinel structure, has recently attracted increasing research interest worldwide. Benefiting from their remarkable electrochemical properties, these MTMOs will play significant roles for low-cost and environmentally friendly energy storage/conversion technologies. In this Review, we summarize recent research advances in… Show more

“…Given that the electrochemical properties of spinel-type transition metal oxides are highly sensitive to their material characteristics, a large number of low-temperature synthesis procedures have been developed for the fabrication of spinel-type transition metal oxides with controlled composition, crystal structures, surface morphologies, and porous structures. 50,[81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88] Although Section 3 provides details of the preparation of spinel-type transition metal oxides and their applications in specific ESSs, here, we highlight the most recent progress in the synthesis of spinel-type transition metal oxides with controlled phases and porous/morphological characteristics.…”

“…14 However, these methods do not change the intrinsic properties of the metal oxides. 15,16 Therefore, achieving the co-existence of large specific surface area and high conductivity in metal oxides themselves has been desired.…”

“…. Metal compounds (metal oxides or metal sulphides) Transition metal oxides are promising candidate for supercapacitor electrodes due to the multiple oxidation states/structures that enable rich redox reactions and high specific capacitance [69][70][71]. Thus, enormous effort has been made to design a robust and stable structure which lead to the superior energy density and long lifetime of metal compounds [72,73]. The metal compound prepared by annealing MOFs shows a relatively high cyclic stability than the other methods due to the pore shape and unique structure [74,75].…”
