Mixing and formation of layers by internal wave forcing

Abstract

Diagnostics for irreversible mixing induced by internal waves in a linear stratification are studied.• The evolution of stratification and turbulent diffusivity are strongly influenced by the normal mode structure.• The formation of staircases by a layering instability is measured in long term experiments.
