Mixing Phenomena in a Bottom Blown Copper Smelter: A Water Model Study

Abstract: The first commercial bottom blown oxygen copper smelting furnace has been installed and operated at Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals since 2008. Significant advantages have been demonstrated in this technology mainly due to its bottom blown oxygen-enriched gas. In this study, a scaled-down 1:12 model was set up to simulate the flow behavior for understanding the mixing phenomena in the furnace. A single lance was used in the present study for gas blowing to establish a reliable research technique and quanti… Show more

“…Chen et al [8] studied the slag chemistry of the bottom blown copper smelting furnace at Dongying Fangyuan, and analyzed the copper losses in the industrial smelting slags. Shui et al [9,10] studied the bath surface wave and mixing phenomena in the bottom blown copper smelting furnace, and provided a better understanding of the blowing patterns. Liu et al [11,12] studied the phase equilibria of the ZnO-"FeO"-SiO 2 system and ZnO-"FeO"-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 system at Po 2 10 −8 atm (10 −3 Pa), which is close to the SKS smelting condition, and found that the presence of ZnO or Al 2 O 3 in the slag significantly increased the liquidus temperature.…”

“…The SKS (Shuikoushan) copper smelting process is very adaptable to complex concentrates and it has high arsenic removal efficiency [9][10][11][12][13]. In recent years, the SKS copper smelting process has become a popular research topic [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Arsenic removal in the SKS smelting process is affected by several factors, such as the composition of concentrate, matte grade, oxygen concentration in air blown into the furnace, oxygen/ore ratio, smelting temperature, the Fe/SiO 2 ratio in slag, and so on.…”
