Mechanical, thermal, and sensitivity properties of plastic bonded explosives (PBX) depend on the type of ingredients in their formulation. Aim of the work is to develop aluminized cast PBX formulations and process conditions by using alternative inert plasticizers to have similar or better properties than PBXN‐109 without compromising sensitivity properties. Although very small portion of total production of plasticizers is used for solid rocket propellant and explosive formulations, they play very significant role in that area. Both inert and energetic plasticizers have involved propellant and explosive formulations to improve process parameters, mechanical properties, and even insensitivity properties of them. Isodecyl pelargonate and dioctyl adipate are the most preferred inert plasticizers in polyurethane based thermoset propellant and explosive formulations. In addition to them, diisononyl adipate and diisononyl phthalate were used and screened as inert plasticizer candidates for aluminized cast PBX formulations. Mechanical, thermal, and sensitivity properties of PBX formulations were studied and compared in detail. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014, 131, 40907.

Energetic thermoplastic elastomers (ETPEs) are futuristic binders for propellant/explosive formulations. Poly(glycidyl nitrate) (PGN)‐based ETPEs have excellent performance, including a high energy and high oxygen content. PGN‐based ETPEs were synthesized on PGN as a soft segment and hexamethylene diisocyanate extended 1,4‐butanediol as a hard segment by a prepolymerization method. The thermal behavior of the PGN‐based ETPEs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetry. A fitting strategy was adopted to study every stage of decomposition. The results show that the ETPEs had four main decomposition processes, and the peaks of each stage were at 212, 262, 322, and 414°C. The gas products were tested by TGA/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/mass spectrometry, and the main gas products of the samples were N2O, CH2O, C2H4O, and CO2. High energetic propellants with synergistic mechanical strength are the prerequisites for aerospace industry and missile technology; though glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) is a renowned and a promising energetic polymer which shows poor mechanical and low-temperature properties. In order to overcome these problems, a novel energetic interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of Acyl-terminated glycidyl azide polymer (Acyl-GAP) and hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is effectively synthesized and characterized via an "in situ" polymerization by triazole and urethane curing system respectively. Acyl-GAP and Dimethyl 2, 2-di (prop-2-ynyl) malonate (DDPM) have been synthesized and well characterized by using FT-IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and GPC. The maximum tensile strength ~ 5.26 MPa and elongation 318 % are achieved with HTPB-PU/Acyl-GAP triazole in 50:50 weight ratios. The solvent resistance properties have been investigated by the equilibrium swelling method and the glass transition temperature (T g ), morphology and thermal stability are evaluated by DSC, SEM and TGA-DTG respectively. Thus, HTPB-PU/Acyl-GAP triazole is a futuristic binder for the composite solid propellant.
