η and η mesons with connection to anomalous glue

Abstract: We review the present understanding of η and η meson physics and these mesons as a probe of gluon dynamics in low-energy QCD. Recent highlights include the production mechanism of η and η mesons in proton-nucleon collisions from threshold to high-energy, the η effective mass shift in the nuclear medium, searches for possible η and η bound states in nuclei as well as precision measurements of η decays as a probe of light-quark masses. We discuss recent experimental data, theoretical interpretation of the differ… Show more

“…It has also been emphasized by the analysis of ref. [16], who have however left open the question whether this involves a coupling to physical pseudoscalar glueball excitations (see also [17][18][19]). Possible pseudoscalar glueballmeson mixing scenarios have been discussed widely in the literature [20][21][22][23][24][25], but exclusively in the form of mass mixings.…”

“…Taking into account the uncertainties in the partial waves makes the asymmetry less acute, but it is still sizeable and negative for both channels. The asymmetry is larger for the η π reaction, making this channel appropriate to search for hybrid candidates [7,8,44].…”

“…• In the isosinglet channel the η and η mesons are too heavy by about 300-400 MeV to be pure Goldstone bosons. They receive extra mass from non-perturbative gluon processes in the flavoursinglet channel [71] connected to non-perturbative gluon topology and the QCD axial anomaly in the divergence of the flavour-singlet axial-vector current [76,77]. While the non-singlet axialvector currents like J…”
