(p,n) Cross Sections and the Strength Functions for 3- to 5.5-MeV Protons on In and on Sn Isotopes

Abstract: The (P, n) reaction cross sections were measured to+4% for 3to 5.5-MeV protons on Sn and on natural Sn and In. Analyses with a conventional optical-model potential were made in the energy regions where the (p, n) cross sections are nearly equal to the total absorption cross sections. These analyses show that the energy dependence in the real well is about three times greater for 5to 10-MeV protons than it is for 10to 61-MeV protons. The best-fit potential for 3to 5.5-MeV protons on the Sn isotopes has a surfac… Show more

“…The "total reaction cross section" also includes inelastic scattering and other direct reactions that do not involve "capture". Over the last decade, a large number of high-quality (1H, n) measurement have been made with proton beams from Van de Graaff accelerators in the energy range from 2 to 7MeV [24,28,30,31]. These measurements, along with those of others [21,22] in the energy range of interest, are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…Proton strength functions were studied at first by means of (p,n) reactions [2][3][4][5][6][7]. This method, however, yields only informations on total strength functions, namely the sum of the contributions from several /-values.…”
