ppInteractions at 2 Bev. I. Single-Pion Production

Abstract: 3600 two-pronged events, obtained in p-p interactions at 2 Bev in the BNL 20-in. hydrogen bubble chamber, have been analyzed. Cross sections have been measured for elastic scattering, for the two modes of single-pion production, p-\-p -» p-3 rn-\-ir + , p+p -> p-\-p-\-n°, and for strange-particle production. The branching ratio for the two one-pion production reactions is c-(£wr + )/a-(^7r°)=4.l7=fc:0.25. Momentum distributions and Q values indicate that single-pion production proceeds almost entirely through … Show more

“…For the pion production channels, most of the data points obtained for √ s between 2.0 and 2.4 GeV come from KEK [7] (black dots) and were not included in the Teis fits, which were based on CERN data tables [2]. For the π + production, the KEK points [7] fit rather well with the Teis curve as well as with previous data [4,16], while they are about 15-20% higher for the π 0 production. Our data are compatible with the Teis curve, despite a slight underestimate of the π 0 production at 2.2 GeV.…”

“…At beam energies higher than 1.5 GeV, the interpretation of the low-statistics bubble-chamber data [16][17][18] was based on the isobar model assuming an incoherent sum of contributions from the decays of various baryon resonances into pions. However, large uncertainties remain, due to the limited statistical significance of the corresponding experimental results.…”

“…These data are shown by the solid squares in Fig. 4 as a function of the excess energy together with the results of the experiment COSY-11 [25,26] very close to threshold, the previous data of COSY-TOF [1,2] and an older data point from BNL [27].…”
