We report the first measurement of analyzing powers and spin correlation parameters using a storage ring with both beam and internal target polarized. Spin observables were measured for elastic scattering of 45 and 198 MeV protons from polarized 3 He nuclei in a new laser-pumped internal gas target at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility Cooler Ring. Scattered protons and recoil 3 He nuclei were detected in coincidence with large acceptance plastic scintillators and silicon detectors. The internal-target technique demonstrated in this experiment has broad applicability to the measurement of spin-dependent scattering in nuclear and particle physics.

The model-independent calculation of the nuclei ground state and the states of scattering can be carried out with due regard for realistic NN and 3N forces between nucleons and also, with the use of exact methods of solving the many-nucleon problem. The tensor part of NN interaction and 3NF's generate the lightest nuclei states with nonzero orbital momenta of nucleons. These states in the lightest nuclei are the manifestation of the properties of inter-nucleonic forces, and therefore, similar effects should be observed in all nuclei and also in all their excited states. In this paper primary attention is given to the investigation of the 4 He nucleus.

We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and 3 He analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient C y,y for p-3 He elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with ∆-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the 3 He binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data.Large sensitivity to the N N potentials and rather small ∆-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that p-3 He scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering.
