In124levels populated in theβdecay ofCd124

Abstract: The β-decay of 124 Cd into levels in 124 In was reinvestigated at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). Fifty MeV protons were bombarded on aranium targets and the induced fission products were mass separated and deposited on a moving tape in the center of an array of γ-detectors. The resulting γ-γ coincidences revealed appreciable disagreement with previous work and has resulted in a revised ordering of the low energy states in 124 In. The resulting partial decay scheme has four energy levels,… Show more

“…Based on our results, we can revise the 124 Cd decay scheme reported in Ref. [61]. By shifting all the levels by the excitation energy of the 3 + state [24.2(26) keV], we note that the 1 + 1 state is now located at 122.9 (26) keV and it overlaps with the state at 122 (15) keV which was previously observed in the (t, 3 He) reaction studies [55].…”

“…This system was also used to examine the lighter, but very neutron-rich nucleus 85 Ge and its decay systematics [283], providing a partial level scheme of the daughter nucleus with several new transitions. For nuclei approaching the N = 82 closed shell, this system was used to measure the decay spectroscopy from decays of 124 Cd and 124,126 Ag [284,285]. The transport tape collector has also been used to study the decay spectroscopy of 137 I and 137 Xe [286].…”

“…state requires strong (maximal ∼ 50%) normal-intruder mixing which, in turn, results in serious disagreements with the observed decay pattern of three-phonon yrast states. (ii) The discrepancy in the decays of the nonyrast two-and three-phonon states persists throughout the range A = 110-126, including the heavier A Cd isotopes[22,23], even though the energy of intruder states rises away from neutron mid-shell, and the mixing is reduced. These observations have led to the conclusion that the normal-intruder strong-mixing scenario needs to be rejected, and have raised serious questions on the valid-…”

“…The crisis culminated in papers claiming the "breakdown of vibrational motion"not only in the Cd [19] but also in the neighboring Pd and Sn isotopes [20]. This paradoxical behavior, characterized in [11] as an unsolved problem, continues to attract considerable attention [21][22][23][24][25][26][27].…”
