MMPI-2 Characteristics in a Chronic Pain Population

Abstract: This study investigated the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) characteristics of 209 chronic pain patients in an inpatient pain treatment program. Patients completed the MMPI-2, Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, and Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire. Participants in this sample were matched with comparison participants from the MMPI-2 normative sample on the demographic variables gender, age, and ethnicity. Chronic pain patients reported higher levels of general maladjustmen… Show more

“…These personality traits of hypochondria, depression and hysteria have been shown to play a role in the chronicization of pain [67] and may increase the affective dimension of pain [68]. Although previous studies reported increased anxiety in chronic pain patients [6,7], our MMPI measurements revealed abnormal anxiety traits in only 11% of our population. More investigations on anxiety and chronic pain are thus needed to better investigate the relationship between both factors.…”

“…Optional questionnaires can be used to assist the psychological assessment. The most recognized questionnaire in this context is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 Restructured (MMPI-2-RF) [6770]. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) allows detection of various states of depression (HADS-D) and anxiety (HADS-A) [7173], and the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire Work and Activity (FABQ) measures patient's fear of pain [74].…”

“…Four major subtypes of chronic pain patients have been identified and cross-validated from responses on the MMPI/MMPI-2, although these four groups may only comprise some 50% of all patients (Keller & Butcher, 1991;Slesinger, Archer, & Duane, 2002;Vendrig, 2000). One of these subtypes involves elevations on most scales and has been characterized as a psychopathological subtype; a second involves a "conversion" profile with particular elevations on scales 1 and 3; a third involves elevation on all of the neurotic triad scales, that is, scales 1, 2 and 3; and the last is generally within normal limits.…”
