MMPI correlates of Negro acculturation in a northern city.

Abstract: MMPI data from 3 groups of pregnant women living in a northern United States city were compared: Negroes born in the South (SN), Negroes born in the North (NN), and whites born in the North (W). 5 of 16 MMPI scales, 20 of 20 race-sensitive factor scales, and 166 of the SSO MMPI items differentiated among groups at statistically significant levels (p < .05). The NN group was halfway between the SN and W groups on the majority of scales and items examined. The results are interpreted as reflecting a process of N… Show more

“…Dozens of articles compared Blacks and Whites on the MMPI validity and clinical scales (reviewed in Dahlstrom, Lachar, & Dahlstrom, 1986; Greene, 1991). Many others attempted to document Black–White differences at the item level (Bertelson, Marks, & May, 1982; Costello, 1973, 1977; Gynther & Witt, 1976; Harrison & Kass, 1967, 1968; Jones, 1978; Miller, Knapp, & Daniels, 1968; Witt & Gynther, 1975).…”

“…Most studies (e.g., Ball, 1960; Dahlstrom, Lachar, & Dahlstrom, 1986; Erdberg, 1969/1970; Harrison & Kass, 1967, 1968; King, Carroll, & Fuller, 1977; McDonald & Gynther, 1963; McGill, 1980) have compared the MMPI scores of African American samples with those of European Americans (see G. C. N. Hall, Bansal, & Lopez, 1999).…”

“…Their MMPI scores were intermediate between white Americans and Negroes in the South (Harrison and Kass, 1968). Support for the model of linear acculturation gradient was pro vided, too, by research on women at Katanga (Congo) coming from more or less acculturated settings (Leblanc, 1960) and by studies of West African high-school students compared with their peers in traditional settings (Omari, 1960).…”
