“…This is a likely explanation given that females, or at least those resident in Western contexts, are more susceptible to experience depression and anxiety ( Nolen-Hoeksema, 2001 ). Moreover, there is evidence to suggest that young adults frequently engage in dysfunctional coping strategies when facing life challenges, for example, problematic gaming ( Gentile, 2009 ) and a reduction in direct interpersonal contact with others ( Drouin, Kaiser, & Miller, 2015 ) have been noted. This explanation gains additional credence when one considers that, in the present study, depression was highly prevalent in the sample, and emerged as a significant predictor of engagement in problematic use.…”
