Abstract: Retroelements (RE) present in the human genome are silenced via multiple mechanisms, including DNA methylation, to prevent their potentially mutagenic effect. RE activity, demonstrated by their expression and somatic retrotransposition events, is deregulated in multiple tumor types but not in leukemia.
