Mobility Management for Hybrid LiFi and WiFi Networks in the Presence of Light-Path Blockage

Abstract: Hybrid light fidelity (LiFi) and wireless fidelity (WiFi) networks (HLWNets) are an emerging indoor wireless communication paradigm, which combines the advantages of the capacious optical spectra of LiFi and ubiquitous coverage of WiFi. Meanwhile, load balancing (LB) becomes a key challenge in resource management for such hybrid networks. The existing LB methods are mostly network-centric, relying on a central unit to make a solution for the users all at once. Consequently, the solution needs to be updated for… Show more

“…A HLWNet containing 4 WiFi APs and 16 LiFi APs is considered. The nearest LiFi APs are separated at a distance of 2.5 m. The height between the user and the LiFi APs is 3 m. The average overhead of HHO is about 200 ms in wireless local area networks (WLANs), while the average overhead of VHO is set to be 500 ms [13]. Other parameters are summarised in Table I.…”

“…The problems such as load balancing, mobility management, light path blockage, and interference management in HLWNets are mainly connected with the problem of handover management. Some recent studies have proposed the handover mechanisms considering either of the problems in HLWNets in [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. In [31], the authors have presented a method for addressing mobility and LoS challenges faced by users in HLWNets.…”
