“…They sustain high rates of annual mortality (Brennan et al 2014), and predators represent a primary source of this mortality (Rollins and Carroll 2001). Woody cover provides protection from predators and inclement weather (Lehmann 1984); thus, bobwhites generally are found in proximity to woody cover (Stoddard 1931, Lehmann 1946, Rice et al 1993). This behavioral response to predation risk suggests that the area in the immediate vicinity of a bobwhite (organism‐centered point) should possess a greater amount of woody cover than the area contained within its home range because the home range would include all the points used by the bobwhites and all points not used (or less used) because they are more open.…”

“…Hunting northern bobwhites is a traditional pastime and generates economic benefit, such as funding conservation initiatives and programs (Burger et al , Crosby et al ). Northern bobwhite hunters help fund fundamental studies on bobwhite life history, covey movements, and habitat management (Stoddard , Lehmann , Rosene ). Furthermore, hunters’ passion and concern for northern bobwhites led to the creation of nongovernment organizations, such as the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative and the Quail Coalition (Brennan ).…”

“…Terhune et al () reported 8% of radiomarked bobwhite may have dispersed off the study site and Townsend et al () found dispersing bobwhite (those that moved >2 km) had a greater survival rate than non‐dispersers (those that moved <1 km). Although rare, relatively long distance movements by bobwhite have been documented (>5 km: Duck , Lehmann ; >10 km: Townsend et al ).…”

“…Movement patterns of juvenile and adult bobwhite from radiotelemetry and band returns indicate bobwhite rarely move long distances. Home ranges from radiotelemetry were usually 2.5 km 2 (Lehmann 1946, Murphy and Baskett 1952, Lohr et al 2011) and most bobwhite rarely moved >2 km (Kabat and Thompson 1963, Roseberry and Klimstra 1984, Fies et al 2002, Townsend et al 2003, Lohr et al 2011. Capture-recapture studies conducted on sites of 388-4,047 ha (Lehmann 1946, Murphy and Baskett 1952, Kabat and Thompson 1963 found that most birds moved only short distances, although 42-79% of birds were never recovered after initial banding and thus fates and/or movements were unknown.…”
