“…The bay encounters strong semi-diurnal tides, with a mean spring tidal range of >4.5 m (Booth, 1975;Marine Institute, 2017). Hydrodynamic models show current speeds (both surface and tidal) between the Aran Islands above 45 m/s −1 in the ebbing spring tide, while wave models, based on wind speeds from the atmospheric research station at Mace Head, show winter wave heights above 2.5 m in the north and south sounds and mid-bay areas (Joshi, Duffy, & Brown, 2017).
