Model development in discrete-event simulation and system dynamics: An empirical study of expert modellers

Abstract: Citation: TAKO, A.A. and ROBINSON, S., 2010 AbstractAn empirical study comparing the model development process followed by experts in DiscreteEvent Simulation (DES) and System Dynamics (SD) modelling is undertaken. Verbal Protocol Analysis (VPA) is used to study the modelling process followed by ten expert modellers (5 SD and 5 DES). Participants are asked to build simulation models based on a case study and to think aloud while modelling. The generated verbal protocols are divided into 7 modelling topics:pro… Show more

“…From a BOR perspective, OR actors are thus an obvious unit of analysis and point of entry into the field. Currently, there a number of studies that focus on particular types of actors such as expert or novice modellers (Tako & Robinson, 2010;Tavella & Papadopoulos, 2015;Willemain, 1994Willemain, , 1995Willemain & Powell, 2007), but there is still little work examining how other types of OR actors contribute to shape OR-supported processes, with few exceptions (e.g. O'Brien, 2015;Ormerod, 2014).…”

“…whether similar results are found with other simulation approaches such as discrete-event or agent based simulation, particularly due to the differences in approaches by system dynamics and discrete-event simulation modellers. (See, for example, Tako & Robinson (2010), and Tako & Robinson (2009).) It would therefore be interesting to investigate whether different methodologies and consultant approaches have an impact on clients' Critical Learning Incidents.…”
