This paper puts forth a dedicated algorithm for automatic generation of water distribution networks based solely on street layouts designed in a CAD environment. In the model, any detected street boundaries are converted into lines that are subjected to a mathematical treatment via parametric representation. These central street lines are extended to generate intersections, which are then used to determine the location of the network’s nodes and later the pipes connecting the nodes. Two different layouts were used to ascertain the efficacy of the model, one hypothetical and one real. The algorithm was considered to yield satisfactory results as it automatically generated the entire grid plan in an EPANET input file for both layouts.
