Model Predictive Control of DC–DC Converters to Mitigate the Effects of Pulsed Power Loads in Naval DC Microgrids

Abstract: This paper proposes design of optimal and robust coordinated controller of hybrid energy storage system in a naval DC microgrid (MG) application. It is able to mitigate the negative effects of the pulsed power loads and meet the practical limitations of both converters input control and state variables signals based on IEEE standards. To do this, first, the dynamic model of the DC MG, which can represent in either all-electric aircraft or shipboard power systems is developed. Second, a novel model predictive c… Show more

“…8 Complexity ship's load power as shown in Figure 10. Due to the lower energy price of CI system compared with the FC system at (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6) and (23)(24) hours, the ship will receive the required energy from the CI system (P 4 ) while being at anchor in port; also the battery bank can be charged from CI system (P 5 ) if needed. is fact is shown in both Figures 9 and 10.…”

“…Studies show that this cost is mostly dependent on the discharged power of the batteries. Hence, only discharged power is considered in the objective function (1). In many studies in the literature, a constant value is assigned to this cost [18,34].…”

“…On the other hand, MPC is regarded as the most promising control approach because of the ability in dealing with the multi-variable constraint problems explicitly [8,9]. In recent years, MPC has been used in the dynamic stabilization of DC microgrids [10], control of electric vehicles [11], load frequency control [12], and control of DC-DC converters [13], achieving good simulation and experimental results.…”

“…In addition to the simple concept and easy implementation, FS-MPC features fast dynamic response and multi-objective optimization. As the most popular predictive control scheme in recent years, FS-MPC has been applied to various power converters [21][22][23][24][25][26], including those used in naval MGs, which are similar to the aircraft MGs [27,28].…”
