Model Scale Analysis of a TLP Floating Offshore Wind Turbine

Abstract: This paper discusses the experimental campaign conducted by CEHINAV-UPM research group as request of IBERDROLA within the OCEAN LIDER RD project framework. The purpose of the campaign has been the hydrodynamic performance of a tension leg platform to support a wind energy turbine (TLPWT). The turbine chosen in this study has been the 5MW reference WT of NREL, the location depth has been 80m and the operation area is Estaca de Bares in the north-west of Spain. Regular waves, operational, survival, failure and t… Show more

“…The TLPWT model used for the testing has been closely based in the NREL concept developed by Matha [9], from an initial investigation from Tracy [27]. This TLPWT concept has been used as a basis for experimental testing, including investigations by Nihei et al [24] and Zamora-Rodriguez et al [34]. The primary motivation behind using a similar hull and turbine arrangement allows for the close comparison of similarities and differences in results from this set of testing to previous experiments.…”

“…In order to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of a TLP FOWT a test campaign was carried out by CEHINAV-UPM research group for Iberdrola and published by Rodriguez et al (2014) . This concept consisted of a central cylindrical column with four square section horizontal pontoons at its base and each pontoon connected with two tendons to the sea bed.…”

“…Examples in recently published literature include tests in which the unsteady aerodynamic thrust force in a hydrodynamic test is generated by a speed-controlled fan based on measurement of the instantaneous velocity at the nacelle (e.g. Zamora-Rodriguez et al, 2014) or those in which the hydrodynamic motions of a floating platform are simulated in a wind tunnel using a hexapod (Bayati et al, 2014).…”
