Model Updating for a Welded Structure Made from Thin Steel Sheets

Abstract: Dynamic behaviour of a welded structure made from thin metal sheets which has a large flat surface and has been assembled together by a number of scattered spot welds is investigated. An impact hammer and roving accelerometers are used in the modal tests to provide data to update the FE model. NASTRAN Solution 103 is used to compute natural frequencies and modes of interest. The large error of the initial FE model is largely reduced mainly by adjusting a crucial parameter of the bending moment of inertia ratio… Show more

“…The bending moment of inertia ratio (BMIR) available in MSC Nastran, which has been successfully implemented by Yunus (2011) and Abdul Rani (2012) in investigating the effect of the preload because of the bolts and washers; and in investigating the effect of the welding process, respectively, was used in this study to represent the accumulated axial stress effect in the adhesive assembly fabrication process.…”

“…BMIR is the ratio of the actual bending moment inertia of the shell element, I , to the bending moment of inertia of a shell element, T3/12, where T is the thickness of the element. I is given as in equation (6) (Abdul Rani, 2012)where W is the width of the element. Therefore, the BMIR is given as (The MSC Software Corporation, 2013)…”

“…The displacement amplitude is constant at each discrete frequency within the frequency range of the vibration mode. In modal analysis, the equation of motion for the dynamic response of a linear model describing structural motion is a second-order differential equation [18]- [20], as in Eq. ( 1).…”
