Modeling and Analysis of the Intermediate Shaft Between Two Universal Joints

Abstract: Unlike a single universal joint, in which the output shaft rotates with a fluctuating speed depending on the misalignment angle, a double universal joint is used to connect two offset shafts. If a double universal joint is correctly arranged, with equal joint angles in perfect alignment, the output shaft rotates in a synchronous motion with uniform speed. However, in practice, the intermediate shaft of a double universal joint system suffers from bending moments induced by joint friction and velocity fluctuati… Show more

“…Besides stability, time or RPM response amplitudes can also be calculated to simulate numerically the system. Methods including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) [27], component mode synthesis [22], and Runge-Kutta-Gill methods [29] were used to simulate and calculate particularly the amplitude response of the system harmonics.…”

“…Reducing the friction leads to substantial reduction in the destabilizing forces. Sheu et al [15] examined the e!ects of joint angles and joint friction on the steady state responses of a double universal joint system. It has been discovered that the misalignment angles have a great e!ect on #uctuation in the output speed.…”

“…T. Iwatsubo [3], A. J. Mazzei [4] and H. Ota [5] also investigated the moments transmitted by a universal joint before they modeling the motion equation of shaft driven by a universal joint. M. Kato [6] and P. P. Sheu [7] studied the transmitted moments in the shaft system driven by a universal joint with friction regarded and in the shaft system driven by two universal joints respectively.…”
