The present study aimed to assess water footprint in the production and export of rice in India. From recent few years, the water footprint conception in full swing to inward detection around the world. The amplified attention in the water footprint has impelled the trade of commodities between countries. Water footprint in the rice field is a sign of water use that exhibits direct and indirect water usage in the rice field. Rice is an important food crop in India. It accesses the flows of water virtually between countries/regions of the world to illustrate the dependency of countries/regions on water resources with other countries/regions under diverse feasible futures. Hence, it is gaining consequence to calculate the water foot print in production as well as export of rice. The Indian rice production and export of rice was calculated by using international trade and domestic production data. The study results indicated that the global footprint of rice production was 235774 Mm3 per ton which was 53 % of green water footprint, 41 % of blue water footprint and 6 % of grey water footprint for 2018-19. The virtual water flowed in trade was 24354 Mm3/year and the percolation was 16924 Mm3/year since rice is a more water consuming crop. The share of basmati and non-basmati trade accounted was 16 % and 42 %, respectively. Virtual water trade in rice can be minimized by exporting less water demand and high-value crops, proper water harvesting structures and other agronomic practices.

India is predominantly a food crop producing country in the world and a leading producer of world’s pulse (25.00%), rice (22.00%), wheat (13.00%) and cotton (25.00%). On the other hand, the country has gone through a substantial shift in cropping pattern from food crops (agricultural crops) to horticultural crops over the last five years (2011-15). The state Tamil Nadu has also witnessed a shift in cropping pattern towards horticulture. Therefore, micro-level research was undertaken in Malaipalayam and Vadavedampatti of Sultanpet block and Naickenpalayam and Nanjundapuram of Periyanaickenpalayam block in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, India. The sample size of the study was 120 farmers. The research found that most (23.50%) of the farmers shifted their cropping pattern to horticulture during the year 2005-06 followed by 11.50 per cent during 2002-03. However, the shift in cropping pattern towards horticulture started during the 21st century. It was observed from the study nearly one-fifth (20.84%) of the farmers chosen Coconut as the sole crop in the place of Pulses (Field bean/Cowpea/Horse gram + Field bean-Mochai) – Maize/ Sorghum + Sugarcane + Fodder crops during 2016-17. Twenty-two farmers cultivated Coconut + Vegetables during 2016-17 yet, these same farmers had the cropping pattern of Sugarcane/Maize/ Sorghum + Pulses (Horse gram + Bengal Gram/Cowpea/Red gram/Green gram/Field bean)/Cotton/ Paddy during 1999-2000. The area under horticulture increased to more than three-fifths (67.35%) of the total area among the farmers during 2009-10 (After Shift). However, the area (4.50%) of horticulture was very less during 1999-2000 (Before Shift) when compared to the area (87.99%) of agriculture to the total area. In this context, this paper elucidates the nature of the shift in cropping pattern from agriculture to horticulture and the present status/ trend of horticulture in Coimbatore district and future prospectus.

In spite of its industrial importance, Hugli is one of the leading potato producing districts of West Bengal with momentous productivity. But the productivity has shown considerable variation in its quantity, yield per unit of land and area under the crop over the last few decades. The present study strives to assess the spatio-temporal dynamics, emphasizing on trend, growth and variability as well as inter-Block variations in potato productivity of Hugli District from 1990-91 to 2013-14. The study was primarily based on the secondary data obtained from various sources. Time series analysis (3 year moving average curve), Coppock’s Instability Index and Sahu’s Simple Achieved Variation have been used to analyze the trend, instability and sustainability of the productivity, whereas, Crop Yield and Concentration Indices Ranking Coefficient is employed to identify productivity regions of potato. The result has revealed a unique oscillating nature in area, yield and output over the study period. The area and the output of the crop have been increased almost 51.70% [Exponential R2= 0.751] and 32.75% [Exponential R2= 0.381] respectively, whereas the yield rate has shown an insignificant positive trend of growth [Exponential R2= 0.014] during the same period. The Blocks have also revealed wide inter-disparity in productivity during the phase with considerable degree of instability and sustainability.
