Abstract: The paper attempts to illustrate the concept behind a newly ernerging area of research, the concept of production networks. The materialization of this paradigm requires clear definitions of the tenns involved, setting up a reference architecture, design and development of supporting platfonns and appropriate control methodologies with protocols and mechanisms.
