Modeling construction labour productivity using fuzzy logic and exploring the use of fuzzy hybrid techniques

Abstract: Recent trends indicate that fuzzy techniques (fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic, and fuzzy hybrid models) have found increased application in the construction domain, even more so in the last half decade. This paper presents the application of fuzzy expert models and fuzzy hybrid concepts in modeling construction labour productivity, which is critical information for scheduling and estimating construction projects. The fuzzy expert model addresses both subjective and objective factors affecting labour productivity… Show more

“…Studies show that it constitutes 20-50% of the overall project expenses (Kaming et al, 1998), hence the overall costs of the project can be significantly reduced by enhancing employment capacity (Kazaz et al, 2008). The significance of construction labor productivity (CLP) in ensuring the accomplishment of construction projects has been described previously in several studies (Sweis et al, 2009;Fayek & Tsehayae, 2012;Hamza et al, 2022). CLP has been identified as a fundamental and effective indicator of efficacy in the construction industry which directly affected the competency of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).…”

“…The hierarchical model allows us to work with fewer rules. The sub-model for this study will be built using only 7-8 factors [47]. With a usable data set of 75 responses from the survey, the hierarchical system allows us to develop the prediction model.…”

“…The SD part contained the factors influencing productivity, while their effects were quantified with the help of the FL component. Robinson Fayek and Tsehayae [40] recommended the application of hybrid FL approaches for the same reason. However, it was noted that the nature of FL limited the number of influencing factors; therefore, sub-factors were required to be introduced.…”
