Modeling emulsion polymerization stabilized by polymerizable surfactants

Abstract: A mathematical model for seeded emulsion polymerization stabilized with polymerizable surfactants (surfmers) was developed. The model accounts for the main features of the process and provides information about surfmer conversion as well as surfmer burying inside the polymer particles. The model was validated by comparing its predictions with the experimental results for the effect of particle size, surface properties of the surfmer, and type of initiator on surfmer conversion. The effect of surfmer reactivity… Show more

“…They are commonly used as the base resins in paint and lamination adhesives due to their † Corresponding author: In-Joo Chin (ichin@inha.ac.kr) good resistance to weather, water, alkalis, contamination, and chemical reactions [1]. An emulsifier is required as a supplemental agent in water-based acrylic emulsion polymerization to obtain the stable and desired particle sizes [2][3][4]. However, its use is problematic in existing emulsion polymerizations.…”

“…Therefore, a mathematical model, which is based on that of de la Cal and Asua [4] for seeded emulsion polymerization stabilized by polymerizable surfactants, was developed. The model presented here considers the fact that the polymeric particles synthesized are also charged polymeric colloids.…”

“…With this radical profile in the polymer particles the average concentration of radicals, as well as the consumption of each monomer (S and A), in the core and in the outer shell can be quantified separately. Methods to calculate this concentration profile have been proposed [5,6], but for the purposes of the present work, the arbitrary profile used by de la Cal and Asua [4] is used:…”
