Simulation models are important tools for the analysis of cultivated systems to estimate the performance of crops in different environments. The CROPGRO-model (DSSAT) was calibrated and validated using Carioca bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to estimate yield and the development of the crop, sown in three row spacings (0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 m) and two fertilization rates (300 and 500 kg ha -1 of 4-30-16 N-P-K), in Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO, Brazil. To calibrate the model a combination of the genetic coefficients that characterize the phenology and morphology of the dry bean crop was used to obtain the best possible fit between predicted and observed anthesis and physiological maturity dates, leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM), yield components, and grain yield for the 0.6 m row spacing. To test the model the experimental records of the 0.4 and 0.5 m row spacings were used. In both, calibration and test, the performance of the model was evaluated plotting observed and predicted values of LAI and TDM versus time, using the r 2 , and the agreement index (d) as statistical criteria. In relation to yield and yield components the percent difference between the observed and predicted data was calculated. The model appeared to be adequate to simulate phenology, grain yield and yield components for the Carioca bean cultivar, related to different levels of fertilization and row spacing, either during calibration or the testing phase. During the test, the grain yield was overestimated by less than 15.4%, indicating a potential use for the calibrated model in assessing climatic risks in this region. O modelo CROPGRO-foi calibrado e testado, utilizandose o cultivar Carioca para estimar a produtividade e o desenvolvimento do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) sob três espaçamentos (0,4, 0,5 e 0,6 m) e duas doses de adubação (300 e 500 kg ha -1 de 4-30-16 de N-P-K), em Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO. A calibração consistiu na modificação dos coeficientes genéticos característicos da fenologia e morfologia do feijoeiro, visando obter os melhores ajustes possíveis entre os dados simulados e os observados a campo das datas de antese e maturação fisiológica, índice de área foliar (IAF), massa de matéria seca total (MMST), componentes de produção e produtividade de grãos para o espaçamento de 0,6 m. Para o teste do modelo foram utilizados os dados experimentais correspondentes aos espaçamentos de 0,4 e 0,5 m. Peanut growers in north Florida asked for help in managing the crop to increase yield and reduce yield variability, using information on the pattern of large-scale climate. The objectives of this study were to explore at 4 locations in the peanut belt of Florida and southern Georgia the potential for improving peanut crop performance by altering crop management according to the phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The CROPGRO-Peanut model was used to simulate peanut yield responses to climate and management. The effects of planting date and irrigation management options on the mean and variability of simulated crop yield and nitrogen leaching in different ENSO phases were estimated. This case study showed potential for enhancing peanut yields (1 to 8%) and reducing yield variability (2 to 12%) by tailoring planting dates to expected ENSO conditions, while at the same time reducing potential environmental damages from nitrogen leaching by 1 to 11%. Locations which appeared to have no ENSO linkages currently showed most responses to tailored management in this simulation study. Tailored management calls for later planting during an El Niño, and earlier planting in a La Niña. When planting dates were tailored to ENSO phases, simulations showed at least 10% lower nitrogen leaching from rainfed production systems in about 70% of the years. Among ENSO phases, La Niña seasons were shown to have greater nitrogen leaching, with little response to management changes relative to El Niño seasons. Tailored management may be most advantageous in El Niño seasons as a result of higher yields and lower nitrogen leaching. Further research is needed before options derived from simulations and optimization can be recommended and adopted with confidence by growers and extension advisors. (1997) have shown that El Niño has little discernable influence on total summer precipitation in Florida. In the summer, climate impacts of El Niño events are more localized. With some exceptions, La Niña events show the reverse of the climate anomalies associated with El Niño events. Knowledge of ENSO events relative to crop growing season is important for understanding analyses of ENSO's influence on agriculture. Although the timing of ENSO events may vary among years, summer field crops (March-October) are most influenced by the preceding ENSO phase . For southern Georgia, Hansen et al. Modelos matemáticos agrometeorológicos que relacionam a fenologia, a bienalidade e a produtividade do cafeeiro, foram desenvolvidos e testados para Mococa (SP), a partir de série de dados de produtividade de cafeeiros adultos, variedade Mundo Novo, correspondente ao período de 1966/67 a 1973/74. Os modelos baseiam-se na penalização da produtividade potencial, em função da produtividade do ano anterior e das relações ER/EP (evapotranspiração real e potencial), derivados de balanços hídricos decendiais seqüenciais durante os estádios fenológicos, considerando 16 combinações diferentes. A penalização é feita à medida que haja restrição hídrica para a planta durante os diferentes estádios fenológicos, considerando coeficientes de resposta da cultura ao suprimento hídrico, incorporados numa função aditiva ou multiplicativa. O modelo com penalização aditiva apresentou melhor desempenho na parametrização dos coeficientes em relação ao multiplicativo. Os melhores ajustes entre dados observados e estimados foram obtidos com modelo aditivo que relaciona o fator hídrico durante os trimestres (combinação D1) jun./jul./ag.; set./out./nov. e dez./jan./fev., os quais apresentaram coeficientes de resposta da cultura ao suprimento hídrico (ky) de +0,38 (ky1), +0,61 (ky2) e +0,18 (ky3), respectivamente, para os estádios fenológicos da dormência das gemas/início do florescimento, florescimento/formação do grão e formação do grão/maturação. As magnitudes dos valores de ky1 e ky2 revelam que a produtividade do cafeeiro é particularmente sensível ao estresse hídrico durante os estádios fenológicos do florescimento e formação do grão. O teste do modelo apresentou boas estimativas, com coeficientes de determinação de 0,93 e índice de concordância (d) de 0,98.
