Modeling of Biologically Mediated Redox Processes Using Sawdust as a Matrix

Abstract: A model simulating reactive transport in natural filter using sawdust as materials to improve the efficiency of filter is developed. The transport part of the model computes the changed in concentration over time caused by the processes of advection and dispersion. The kinetic sub model describes the heterotrophic metabolisms of several groups of bacteria. To model a complete redox sequence (aerobic oxidation, denitrification, Mn (IV)-reduction, Fe (III)-reduction and sulfate reduction) four functional bacteri… Show more

“…Also, the high concentration of the ions dissolved inside the anode chamber increased by 23.73% using Cu/NZVI, whereas NZVI particles enhanced the TDS by just 13.83%. This highlights the effective bimetallic nanoparticles reactivity with organic matter compounds [30], [31], [32]. In a further step, bacterial growth response to the nanoparticles treatment was examined and results showed that iron nanoparticles stimulate the active bacteria.…”

“…Environmental pollution due to the presence of pharmaceuticals in wastewater is one of the major threats to aquatic environment globally and it attracts great attention nowadays as one of the hot topics around the world. Huge amounts of pharmaceuticals enter the surface water bodies after the partial removal by the conventional WWTP [46][47][48][49]. Different studies have been focused on integrating different kinds of algae for this process [50].…”

“…3) the produced H2 by the corrosion reaction of zero valent iron promotes hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis and homoacetogenesis bacteria. 4) the released electrons by the corrosion reaction of zero valent iron contribute for the conversion of CO2 to CH2, increasing CH4 generation ratio within the produced gases [12][13][14]. This happens when protons in the digester are reduced by the electrons of zero valent iron and then utilized for the conversion of CO2 into CH4 as described by equation 1 [15].…”
