In this work, it is presented an innovative soil remediation technology consisting of the combination of soil washing, GAC adsorption and electrolysis. This technology is applied for the remediation of soil polluted with herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The new combined process involves three steps into a single chamber: first step is related to the washing of soils using groundwater as soil washing fluid, the second step is related to the herbicide removal from the produced soil washing effluent by adsorption onto granulated active carbon and the third step is the use of electrolysis to oxidize the 2,4-D and provide bubbles that enhance the mixing and separation by dissolved gas flotation. All processes are studied alone and in combination. The obtained results pointed out the possibility for total removing of the herbicide content in the contaminated soil, simultaneously to the herbicide removal contained in soil washing effluent, which become ready to be recycled as a fresh soil washing fluid. The proposed combined treatment for complete decontamination of soils polluted with 2,4-D herbicide was successfully tested for 0.1 kg soil, contained 20 mg herbicide per kg of soil, using 1 dm 3 of synthetic groundwater as washing effluent and 10 g GAC, and passing through this mixture an electrical current of 0.5 A, during 2 h.

This article presents semi-analytical solutions and temporal moments of the general rate model of chromatography with a focus on evaluating the effect of finite rates for the adsorption and desorption steps, typically considered to be in equilibrium. The model equations are analytically solved in the Laplace domain and numerical Laplace inversion is applied to get back solutions in the actual time domain. The expression of first four temporal moments are derived from the analytical solutions in the Laplace domain. The derived analytical solutions and moments are helpful tools to predict dynamic behaviors inside the column and to evaluate the influence of model parameters on the elution profiles, in particular the effect of finite rates of the intrinsic adsorption and desorption steps. The correctness of analytical solutions are verified through the numerical solutions of a high resolution finite volume scheme. Several case studies are considered to quantify effects of the rate constants for adsorption and desorption, axial dispersion, film mass transfer resistance, intraparticle diffusion resistance, and inlet boundary conditions on the elution profiles.

A simple mathematical model is developed for the prediction of Metribuzin removal efficiency through adsorption using activated carbon of olive-waste cake for any combination of input conditions. Based on earlier experimental results, factors from three independent variables (pH, initial Metribuzin concentration and adsorbent dose concentration) were incorporated in the model. All the factors are multiplied to derive a combined diminishing factor, which is multiplied with maximum achievable removal efficiency. It is found that although the model results are having good correlation (0.92) with the experimental results, those are slightly away from the ideal line. Through the introduction of an adjustment factor, model predictions are closely matching with the measured values having a correlation coefficient of 0.96. The primary model predicted results are having standard errors as RMSE = 6.34, MAE = 5.99 and RAE = 0.07, whereas the same error statistics of the adjusted model are 1.97, 1.71 and 0.01, respectively. Such modelling technique will predict removal efficiency for any combination of input parameters, which at times are required to be changed for other constraints.
