Modeling of the HIV epidemic and continuum of care in French Guiana

Abstract: BackgroundIn order to compute the continuum of care for French Guiana, it is necessary to estimate the total number of persons living with HIV. The main objective was to determine how many persons were infected with HIV and how many were unaware of it.MethodsWe used 2 different models to calculate the total number of persons infected with HIV: Spectrum’s AIM module using CSAVR to compute incidence from case registration and vital statistics; and the ECDC model from the French Guiana HIV cohort data.ResultThe p… Show more

“…They may also be associated with increased risk of sexually transmitted infections, condom rupture and sexual partner injury. [ 2 ] In the context of French Guiana, where HIV infection is prevalent[ 9 ], notably among inmates, where it is associated with poor outcomes[ 10 ], penile nodules may thus present an additional risk. In addition, they are a frequent cause of emergency calls for interventions ranging from suturing at the prisons medical facility to medical evacuation when deep vascular lesions and uncontrolled bleeding require surgical exploration.…”

“…In the decade since then, as the cascade of care improved, mortality gradually declined in HIV-infected patients but the context of death remains similar. [17,18] Although anti-tuberculosis treatment is specific, antifungal treatment is not specific to histoplasmosis, which makes it more difficult to ensure it was prescribed for histoplasmosis. Despite these limitations, this hospital cohort data brings an interesting light to the challenges faced by clinicians and shows gaps in the HIV recommendations.…”
